Creating Character through Physical Theatre
Martine Baanvinger, DramaLAB Theatre Company (Mohua Golden Bay)
“Martine’s ability to create a safe space for creative expression and artistic development is unparalleled. Her specific skill set, experience and energy enable students to access their inner performer with ease and joy. And therefore create characters which are unique, dynamic and wholly their own.” Deb Morris
Actor and director Martine Baanvinger will facilitate the process of creating characters for the stage through physical theatre in this dynamic and fun workshop. The focus is on body shape, gesture and movement to create strong comic and dramatic characters in a short period of time.
With over 25 years of experience in theatre in The Netherlands and New Zealand, Martine has specialised in devising original work and physical theatre. Besides touring her own solo work throughout Aotearoa, she also facilitates trainings and workshops, and devises shows with DramaLAB Theatre Company.
In this workshop Martine will be offering clear building blocks that allow an actor to build up a character in a very short period of time. By exploring and expanding the range of body movement, creating awareness of shape in the body and realizing the power of gestures big or small, the actor becomes versatile and fast in creating and switching colourful characters.
Although this workshop is a dynamic physical exploration of the body, Martine works with participant’s individual physical limitations. So any level of experience, fitness and movement abilities is welcome.
