The Girmit

The Girmit
Nadia Freeman (Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington)

“A powerful mesmerising and moving theatre experience.” – Theatreview
“Freeman uses the juxtaposition between her own ethereal vocals and the horror of the past to create an ambience like nothing I have ever experienced.” – The Post

An immersive experience through the Pacific’s untold history of indentured labour from India to Fiji.

Nadia uses live sound sampling techniques, narrations of archived accounts, songs and poetry to tell you the story of her ancestors.

The Girmityas were the 60,000 Indians taken to faraway countries to replace the labour gap left by slavery.

After the show, stay for korero and questions with Nadia.

The Girmit was awarded Outstanding Technical Achievement at Dunedin Fringe Festival at the APRA AMOS Art Music grant and supported by Kia Mau Festival.

The show’s debut had a sell-out season, so buy your tickets now before they sell out.
