The Umbrella Project

The Umbrella Project
Ro Cambridge & Donna Chapman (Whakatū Nelson)

The Umbrella Project presents a showcase of excerpts from longer theatre-works-in-progress, devised with the support of Donna Chapman and Ro Cambridge, creators of The Departure Lounge, the one-woman show that won Audience Favourite at the 2023 Nelson Fringe Festival.

Expect surprising and provocative one-woman theatre, created and performed by Karolina Gorton, Sarah McCallum, and Shannon Nicholson with Ursula Nicholson.

The Umbrella Project supports writers and/or performers in the process of devising and performing original theatre work. Our thanks to Creative Communities and Refinery Artspace.

Tender Buttons
Devised and performed by Sarah McCallum

A play about a tale about a play about Archimedes, a few moray eels, a lot of existential anxiety, and a mention of Diogenes of Sinope. There is also a mermaid. Actually, the mermaid is the best part of the whole thing.

Time Weavings
Devised and performed by Shannon Nicholson, with Ursula Nicholson

This work explores the role of women linked through time, faith, and science. The net symbolically transforms, connects, constricts, and comforts. And so does sound and music, both secular and sacred.

The Passage
A journey through dreams where real things happen
Devised and performed by Karolina Gorton

How can we find a way to live fully, when everyday life demands so much of us? This piece opens in the real world, then plunges us into the place where the fantastical and the mundane co-exist. Is the solution to the striving, stress and anxiety of life to be found by diving deeply into dream and ritual? Or could a mysterious phone call hold the answer?
